Formerly the Sultans palace it has since 2005 been restored as the Malay Heritage Centre and houses exhibits relating to the history of the area and of the Malay world. Like the Istana Kampong Gelam the architecture of Gedung Kuning reflects Palladian influence while the form and internal layout derives from the single storey raised Malay house.
